RVTS training update –
September 2023

by Dr Ronda Gurney, RVTS Director of Training

Over the past quarter, our team has been hard at work providing crucial support to registrars and supervisors in some of Australia's more challenging locations.

Dr Ronda Gurney, RVTS Director of Training.

From tailoring webinar content to the unique demands of rural, remote and AMS clinical practice; observing registrar consultations and delivering insightful feedback; and crafting workshop sessions that promise to elevate the skills of registrars, our Education team is united by a single goal – to help our registrars become the best GPs or Rural Generalist doctors they can be.

Notably, the RVTS success rate in both RACGP and ACRRM exams continues to match the national average, highlighting our collective dedication.

Registrars in our 23.2 cohort have settled into the program well after the commencement of their training at the end of July. We enjoyed meeting new registrars and supervisors (and welcoming back seasoned supervisors and Alumni as supervisors) at our workshop in Brisbane earlier this month.

As part of our commitment to provide enhanced support for RVTS registrars, we were also pleased to recently announce the launch of our Standby Supervisor Pilot.

Under this pioneering initiative, we have tapped into the expertise of experienced RVTS supervisors as standby mentors, creating a safety net for registrars by offering prompt answers to pressing queries that can’t wait for regular supervisor meetings or when local contacts are not immediately available.

The pilot program showcases our commitment to creating a flexible training environment that prioritises patient safety and registrar support. Importantly, it is designed to support, not replace, the current supervisor arrangements.

Continuing our efforts to strengthen ties with the practices where RVTS registrars work, we are looking forward to presenting our 3rd Practice Engagement Webinar in October. This informative webinar for practice managers and practice principals will address common questions, concerns and queries from practices, enhancing their interaction with the RVTS program. Keep an eye out for more details and registration information – this promises to be a valuable resource for everyone involved.

In closing, I extend my heartfelt thanks to the RVTS Education team for their dedication and support. Our appreciation also goes out to RVTS’s supportive admin staff who are there every step of the way. Special gratitude to our supervisors for their invaluable mentoring role, and a big thankyou to all RVTS registrars and supervisors for their commitment to providing essential services to their communities all over Australia.

Warm regards,

Dr Ronda Gurney
