Dr Sonia Singh

Medical Educator (Exam Prep)
Has worked with RVTS since 2012
GP in Mandurah, WA

Tell us about your childhood – where were you raised?

I was born in India, and travelled all over India with my family due to my father’s profession (he was in the Army and posted to various places in India).

Did you always want to become a doctor?
Yes…once I decided that being a vet in India was very difficult, I chose the next best thing – being a doctor!

What appealed to you about working in general practice?
The great opportunity to give continuity of care, and the diversity of skills required to provide this care – there’s no chance of getting bored.

Did you spend much time in rural Australia – if so, where and in what capacity?
As a GP based mainly on Flinders Island, Tasmania, and doing locums all over Tasmania.

Where did your career path take you before you joined RVTS?
I was a GP and then a Gynaecologist and Obstetrician in India. Now a GP in Australia.

What does your role at RVTS involve?
My portfolio is Medical Educator (Exam Prep) which involves setting up exam prep activities for RVTS registrars.

What appeals to you most about working with us?
RVTS is an organisation that works hard to provide the best possible GP and Rural Generalist training to registrars who work in remote and rural Australia, where they are isolated and don’t have much collegial support and would struggle to get their Fellowship otherwise. The ethos of the organisation – where each registrar is well known along with their family, and are not just a number and a name – appeals to me.

What interests do you have outside Medicine?
Travelling, walking on the beach with my dog, pottering in my garden, knitting, crochet, tatting, reading – I have too many interests to put them all in here!

What do you think you’ll be doing in ten years’ time?
Probably the same as I’m doing now – a mix of General Practice work and medical education.

What are some of the countries you have travelled to – and what were your favourite destinations?
The United States (including Alaska), Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, most of Europe and China. My favourite destination was Alaska – I loved the raw beauty of its frozen wilderness.
