Dr Sanjaya Kapuwatte was appointed Board Chair in September 2024.

Having first been appointed to the RVTS Board in 2021, Dr Kapuwatte served as Deputy Chair from 2023, before being elected Chair.

Sanjaya is a distinguished medical professional with a rich and diverse background in healthcare, spanning over two decades. After graduating from North Colombo Medical College, Sanjaya dedicated over ten years to serving in various capacities across both urban and rural settings in Sri Lanka. In 2006, Sanjaya relocated to Seychelles, where he worked for the Ministry of Health. In 2008 after relocating to Australia Sanjaya was recruited to work in the Emergency Department of Campbelltown Hospital, where he honed his skills in emergency medicine over five years. Sanjaya’s extensive experience also includes specialties in surgery, general medicine, paediatrics, and mental health.

Transitioning to general practice, Dr Kapuwatte moved to Bathurst, New South Wales and obtained Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP). Beyond his practice, Sanjaya is committed to the medical community as an RVTS supervisor, training and mentoring GP registrars in rural settings. He also serves as a conjoint lecturer with the Western Sydney Rural School of Medicine in Bathurst, contributing to the education of future medical professionals. As an RVTS supervisor, Sanjaya continues to train and mentor GP registrars in a rural setting. His dedication to education is also evident in his role as a conjoint lecturer with the Western Sydney Rural School of Medicine in Bathurst, where he contributes to shaping the next generation of medical professionals.

Dr Kapuwatte’s career is characterised by a profound dedication to patient care, education and leadership in the medical field. His journey from Sri Lanka to Australia as an International Medical Graduate exemplifies his adaptability and unwavering commitment to improving health outcomes in rural communities.
